Hey Folks, thought I would pop on by here just to say hi and update you on a few things prior to the start of the second season of the show we all love so much. After a work shakeup that had me working every day, I was able to finally get a day to write a few words on a subject that has been bothering me lately.

Over the Christmas holiday, I was able to get on to my twitter and face book accounts and actually see what was going on. Boy was I surprised. #Withoutlander has really made some of you nuts. I get that, I’m going through a bit of withdrawal too. But there are those of you who are becoming a little over the line in the obsessive nature of your fandom.

First, I’m a fan of the show, but I’m a bigger fan of the books. They will always be my first love. Is Sam Heughan the way I pictured Jamie? Not really, but he’ll do. Was Caitriona who I pictured as Claire? Not really, but she’ll do. Over the course of sixteen episodes, I found myself falling in love with them, their chemistry together, their acting ability, and the way they dealt personably with fans. Hell, a lot of the success I had with this blog is because of Sam Heughan, and I will be forever grateful for that.

But as a fan, I know there are boundaries in what I can and cannot say in social media. As an actor myself, on stage and the small screen, I have had some small indication of what actors go through on a daily basis when interacting with other folks. For the most part, these interactions are nice, brief affairs with only a few kind words. I have never had the instances of behavior I have seen sent toward Caitriona, Sam, and the rest of the crew.

In the beginning, we had all kinds of negativity thrown at Caitriona for her looks. To which I say, “Are you the most beautiful human being on the planet? No? Then shut up!” Guess what: She is laughing all the way to the bank riding on a cushion of supermodel money, while you’re on a computer slinging stones. I think she’s doing okay, thankyouverymuch.

We heard the same with Sam, how he didn’t look like the Jamie we all know and love from the books. And where is he? Climbing rocks and living the life with blond actresses like a young man about town. And he deserves it. He has worked very hard for his success. He helps children realize their dreams all over the world through his charities. How about you? Give to the salvation army this Christmas? No, I don’t think so. Again, stop casting stones.

Oh, and to the ones that say, “You should change your public behavior. If I was your mother, I would be ashamed of seeing you frolicking with bikini blondes in pools.” Guess, what, Mrs. Twitter queen. YOU. DON’T. GET. TO. TELL. SAM. WHAT. TO. DO. PERIOD. He is a personal man and he wants it to stay personal. He doesn’t have to take orders from you. Trust me, when I was his age, I was single and living the life too. Admittedly not as exciting as Mr. Heughan, but fun nonetheless. You are not his mother, girlfriend, lover, or confidant. Wht he does in his personal life is what he does, not you.

Oh, and to all you twitter queens that wake up in the morning and tweet things like, “Good morning @SamHeughan” please just stop. He doesn’t respond to that. Really, he doesn’t. I would venture to guess it’s more of a bother to him than anything else. All you’re doing is fishing for a response from your imaginary boyfriend so later you can post pictures all over your site as to how the great Jamie Fraser acknowledged you in your piece of the universe. Guess what, he has over 700K followers, and while he appreciates every one of us, he has little time to engage in frivolities with each and every one. He has a social media manager now, anyway, so odds are, you’re not going to get anywhere close to the top of his feed.

Caitriona is already off of twitter except for a few instances here and there, probably becaue she got so irritated with the next group of people I’m going to talk about. You Shippers.

Shippers: The fans who desperately want the leading actor and actress to have a relationship in real life.
Yes, you folks that want the actress and actor of a romance to be in lurve off camera. Stop that. Please. Caitriona and Sam are friends. That’s it. They act together on a hit TV show. That’s it. The actors all have significant others. That’s it. They respect each other as professionals. That’s it.  They are not, will they ever be in a real life relationship. they will never get married, and they will never have miracle Outlander babies that look like Bree. Please, stop trying to make this happen!

Every time I see something about this actor and actress are in a certain area together and they aren’t filming, you’ll see, “Squee, they’re dating! See? We were right!” No you’re wrong. No they aren’t dating, they’re probably on a publicity junket for a new market. This kind of behavior makes other outlander fans do this…

nedpalm

It’s also an invasion of privacy. Don’t you folks have more important things to do than scour the internet for the latest gossip about your favorite two people in the whole world? Like jobs, for instance, or kids, or your significant other? Take a break, read a book that isn’t outlander. I’ve done that. I’ve stayed away from twitter and social media because it’s just too much work keeping up with the stupid that goes on there. And when I do check up, from time to time I find something that makes me sigh.

So please, all of you who are doing this, respect the boundaries of the actors. I know you’re a fan, but don’t be like Annie Wilkes, please. The last thing Sam and Cait need are over obsessive fans ruining their lives by needless intrusion. Watch the show, and leave them alone. Everyone will be happier as a result.

Thank you.

Also, I know some of you might be fuming right now, and I respect that. I wouldn’t have said anything if I didn’t think I could take the heat. I thank all of you for your kind words, and I will also respect any negativity that comes as a result of this missive. So go ahead, as the black knight in Monty Python says, “Do your worst!”

  1. You’re so wrong! They WILL fall in love with each other and then kiss, and an angel will tell a stork, and the stork will fly down from heaven, and leave a diamond under a leaf in the cabbage patch, and the diamond will turn into a baby! I say this for 2 reasons: One, I love the Addams family. And two, this level of obsession is full of delusion and a bull shit. Oh yeah, and it’s annoying. Good read–well done.

  2. Absolutely well said…and will have to add that since I never read the books until after seeing the first season I can happily say that as I read I have the privilege of seeing each character clearly in my minds eye. Thank you for standing up for these fine performers!!

  5. It makes me uncomfortable to see some of the antics that happen on fan pages for the show. I have loved Outlander since the first book came out but I refrain from stalking whether it is in an online way or personally. Some comments made about actors in the show would qualify as sexual harassment in the real world. I say drop a line occasionally, wish them Happy Birthday, support their causes and just say Thank you for a fine job. But I agree, sometimes the Fandom for Outlander crosses the line. Please folks, be respectful of the actors. We can still be wonderful fans without making them uncomfortable. And they will love us all the more for it.

  10. Thank you so much for saying this!! As a person new to the Outlander world, I have found myself scratching my head at some of these obsessive fans that want to dress and pretend they are part of this fictional series and how inappropriate it is for these actors to actually do as most of us two-part people do… Drink, smoke, date, vacation, etc. I was personally stacked on one of the Facebook fan pages because I said I didn’t care that Duncan aka Murtaugh smoked in between takes while filming season 2… So thank you for this wonderful, insightful blog calling the FANATICS out!!

  12. I too am an Outlander fan, came to the show and then discovered the books. I am disabled and therefore have a lot of time on my hands, but I also have a lot of life on my hands as well. I think a “healthy” obsession, and enjoying the show and actors is ok, as was said, but the over the top needing to know what is going on in there personal lives is a bit insane. It is called a personal life b/c it’s personal. Thanks for sharing your opinion, it is obviously one many people agree with and you can count me among them.

  13. Very good….more outlander shippers/etc need to see this. To be honest I didn’t know what a shipper was until I read your article. I enjoy the books enormously and the show the same. The actors made the books come alive for all of us. Good job actors, crew, writers, and especially Diana Gabaldon for making it happen. Maybe you need to put this on twitter and facebook too!

  15. I could not agree more. I do not do twitter and all the things you said, is a big reason why. While the cast constantly raves about how great the fans are, I wonder if some is not tongue in cheek – knowing some of the crap they get from social media. The Jamie and Claire in our heads – as we read the books – can never be the J & C on screen – as we all have different heads and different ideas about how they look. I am happy with Cait and Sam and mostly because Diana was/is happy with them. After all – she created them. Enough said.

  18. I agree its over the top on SM when people are looking to just grab attention and will use any means necessary including asking friends of the actors for info, that in mho is crossing a line. However, I think its ok to have an opinion on all sides of the fandom as long as you don’t push yours as the only real opinion, basically stay in your own lane so to speak. Also your statement in CAPS is as if you know Sam and Caitriona personally. Whatever their relationship may be its theirs and who are you to say they will never have a RL relationship or any thing else for that matter. Your just as bad as everyone your complaining about then aren’t you.

  21. Hey… how about you pinpoint the obsessed fans you are worried about and send this to them privately? Otherwise you are just peeing in the wind, here. I know, I know, these posts are popular because people like to feel they are “better fans” than someone else. That’s why these posts are SO COMMON. But remember in 3rd grade when ONE kid did something and the teacher yelled at EVERYONE and NO ONE specifically? Yeah.. that’s you. Annoying, right?

I completely agree! They are acting, and doing a fabulous job of bringing our favorite book characters to life right before our eyes. I know we’ve waited YEARS for this, and now that Outlander is on the screen, we need to continue to love the books, thank Diana, thank Ron, thank the actors, let them do their jobs, enjoy their own private lives, and keep our obsessions out of their lives.

They’ve lost any anonymity they ever had. Let’s not go off the rails and take away whatever they have left of their privacy!

Thank you for such a great statement on how to treat these talented, kind, and genuinely good people.

  34. So the God and the Goddess has stopped talking to their whorshipers… Strange… I was talking about something similar this evening with my husband while watching again the Movie Notting Hill. I asked what was his theory of why we “normal people” become fascinated by actors. Next summer are we flying across the Atlantic and almost the entire United States to see live our superstars in a room filled with 20,000 fans (Star Trek 50 years convention in Las Vegas) … He squeezed out something strange but interesting as usual. He explained to me that we have originally (as apes if you want) a flock awareness. The IT society has evolved in a way that encourages us to isolate ourselfes. Just think of all the people who use public transports, and surf on their i-phone/Androids. The only thing that binds us and gives us a surrogate to the need belonging to the flock is the TV in the living room, the episode in the phone, the movie at the cinema. The actors are already a part of the larger flock. Getting attention from them gives us an extra kick .. We believe we are part of the their flock. Some go further to obtain the thrill back and become stalkers in the worst of the cases. Others will be happy for a while. Yes, it is a strange explanation, but quite logical. Now both Sam and Cait apparently (I never made contact with them, too dull?) were generous. Now that a Social media manager (is that really a profession?) has come in between, does not sound good at all. Personally, I am much disappointed in them who has caused it or your writing. But I am also disappointed in the actors who have opted out something important … interaction with their customers. We are in the end the isoleted people who sit behind the keys and the screens and vote the actors until the fingers eaches to get their acknowledgments as the year’s best actor/actress. And yes… John Cleese still care about the money that his fans pay to see him. He has a very espensive divorce to pay.

The books are the real jewels and Sam and Cate have done an excellent job representing the characters. They have been patient with loyal fans and are touched by the outpouring of attention. My advise for those obsessive Outlanders is reread all 8 books and by the time you finish season 2 will be ready.

  46. Perfectly put! I have even been a teeny bit alarmed at those who refer to Ms. Gabaldon as “herself” as if she were royalty. She’s wonderfully talented as a writer and I love ALL her books but seriously! There are far too many creepy fans and that obsession could bite them on the behind. Sam and Cait, as actors may become overly sensitive to all the hoopla and decide it’s too much. Then…gone. It won’t be worth the sheer amount of trouble due to, not fans but fanatics.
